Aurora University students invite community to 'Latino Fest' Tuesday

AURORA, Ill. November 10, 2004 - Music, food, and comments by local Latino leaders will highlight a second annual "Latino Fest" from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at Aurora University.

The public is invited to the event at Perry Theatre in Stephens Hall, 1305 Kenilworth Place, Aurora. Admission is free but a donation is requested.

Sponsor is Latin American Students Association (LASO), an AU student club.

Gisela Herrera, LASO president and sophomore business administration major from Wheeling, said 15 LASO members are producing the event. LASO adviser is Denise Hatcher, assistant professor of Spanish.

Dance groups scheduled to perform are Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl of Aurora and LASO and AU pep squad members.

The event opens with refreshments including cheese quesadillas, orchata (rice water beverage), churros, and empanedas.

Guest speakers are Nelly Venecia of Aurora, a youth counselor and interpreter at Aurora's St. Nicholas Catholic Church; Dr. Jose Magana, M.D, staff physician at Dreyer Medical Clinic, Aurora; and Mary-Lou Chapa, president, Chapa Realty, Aurora.

A poetry reading and four free raffles will be held during the event.
